The Pune based auto manufacturer would be launching its first electric three wheeler in April. Bajaj Auto is a market leader in three wheeler segment with a market share in excess of 75%. However, they never had any product offering in the electric three wheeler segment. But now that is about to change.
Bajaj would be offering electric three wheeler for both cargo and passenger vehicle segments. The rollout would happen in a phased manner, availability would be subjected to limited number of cities initially. The company had planned to introduce the electric three wheeler last year, but cancelled it owing to user safety issues.
Rakesh Sharma, executive director of Bajaj Auto said, “We will start the sales in April for cargo and passenger electric three wheeler vehicles. There will be a limited launch as we want to take it step by step, as it is very important to give a stable product to the commercial user.”
He further added “The FAME approval and ARAI certification has been done. There will be limited dispatches in the next couple of weeks. The dealerships are being prepared and the training is underway.”
The electric three wheeler market in India is expected to grow at a rapid pace especially because of the low operating cost, something that attracts fleet owners. Currently, the electric three wheeler segment in India is dominated by Mahindra & Mahindra. Some other electric three wheeler manufacturers include Piaggio and Kinetic Green. But now after Bajaj’s entry the space would only become competitive.
