Volvo is set to unveil its upcoming ES90 electric sedan on March 5, and ahead of its global debut, the company has shared key details about its performance and technology. The Volvo ES90 is designed to offer an enhanced electric driving experience, with a focus on faster charging, longer range, and sustainability.

Charging and Range: 300 km in 10 Minutes
The Volvo ES90 will feature 800-volt technology, enabling faster charging and longer driving distances than previous Volvo EVs. The new system allows the ES90 to add up to 300 kilometers of range in just 10 minutes when connected to 350kW fast-charging stations. With a WLTP-tested range of up to 700 kilometers, the ES90 aims to provide a long-range driving experience with minimal downtime.
The vehicle’s upgraded 800-volt system ensures more efficient power delivery, reducing heat buildup and allowing for faster charging without overloading the system. This technology makes the ES90 one of the most capable electric sedans in terms of charging speed.
Efficient Charging Time
Volvo has also introduced new battery management software for the ES90. The updated system reduces charging time from 10% to 80% to 20 minutes, which is a 30% improvement compared to previous Volvo EVs. This faster charging time could make the ES90 more convenient for long trips, helping drivers minimize waiting at charging stations.
Sustainability: A Focus on Eco-Friendly Materials
Sustainability remains a key consideration in the ES90’s design. Volvo has incorporated recycled and natural materials in the car’s construction to help reduce its CO2 emissions. For example, 29% of the aluminum and 18% of the steel used in the ES90 is recycled, while 16% of the vehicle consists of recycled polymers and bio-based materials. The wood panels in the car are also FSC-certified, ensuring responsible sourcing.
Technology and Safety Features
The Volvo ES90 will come equipped with advanced safety and driver-assistance systems. These include a LIDAR sensor, five radars, and eight cameras, which work together to enhance the vehicle’s ability to detect and respond to its environment. The ES90 will also be the first Volvo to feature a dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin configuration, which increases the vehicle’s computing power for smoother, more efficient operation.
Design: A Modern Electric Sedan
In terms of design, the ES90 retains elements from Volvo’s S90 sedan, but with some modern touches. The rear of the car will feature LED light strips near the rear windscreen, while the charging port will be located on the left rear fender—a shift from the right rear fender placement on the S90. The ES90 will also incorporate Volvo’s signature Thor’s Hammer LED lighting at the front.
Looking Ahead
With the ES90, Volvo continues to advance its goal of creating electric vehicles that combine performance, efficiency, and sustainability. The 800-volt architecture, faster charging capabilities, and eco-friendly materials make the ES90 a notable entry in the growing electric vehicle market. As the launch date approaches, more details about the ES90’s features and performance are expected to be revealed.
