India is currently witnessing a surge in EV adoption. Electric Vehicle sales constituted 5% of the total automobile sales in the country.
Out of the total EV sales, majority have been contributed by two wheeler and three wheeler sales. According to Government’s Vahan website electric two wheeler sales stood at 86,136 units, electric three wheeler sales at 46,941, electric four wheeler sales (both commercial and passenger vehicles) at 7345 units. E-Bus sales recorded a figure of 87. Together 1,40,509 EV units were sold in March.
The sales have been majorly a result of government friendly policy towards electric vehicles, increasing EV awareness among public, rising fuel prices, increasing capacity of charging networks. Major cities in India are seeing a rise in EV penetration. Pune, a major city in India witnessed 200% spike in the registration of electric vehicles as compared to last year’s number of 8,668 registrations.
Major electric two wheeler manufacturers are growing in double digits month on month. With these numbers it is pretty clear that EV penetration is about to increase further in coming years.
